I am excited to announce that I will be in an upcoming art show with five other artists, collectively known as "The Escape Artists. The Escape Artists from Minneapolis will present their new exhibit, “Master Manipulation,” at the Hopkins Center for the Arts with a reception on March 3, 2012, from 6:00 pm – 8:00pm.

Each of the six Escape Artists has created an interpretation of twelve famous works by influential master artists. The selected images of the famous historic paintings will be displayed with original contemporary paintings by each Escape Artist.

These creative artists include Nancy Patrick Carney, Calvin deRuyter, Emily Donovan, Susan Fryer Voigt, Emmy White and Pamela Weisdorf. The group came together in 2010 with a goal of collaborating on a project that would push them beyond their artistic comfort zones and result in an educational and unique group show. What ties the Escape Artists together is a serious approach to creating work that is fresh and continues to expand one’s thought process. This exhibit demonstrates how the works of the masters continue to influence painting in the 21st century.

Nancy Patrick Carney creates imaginatively stylized urban paintings of city landscapes and the variety of people who live there. Calvin deRuyter is a colorist who enjoys exploring the boundaries and outer limits of the mediums he uses, primarily watercolor. Emily Donovan explores the use of multi-media, texture and color to create abstract imagery influenced by the work of abstract expressionists and biomorphic artists. Susan Fryer Voigt enjoys mixing and co-mingling art materials to create dazzling effects in her landscapes, still lifes and innovative paintings. Emmy White creates large, colorful watercolors to tell interesting stories that reach into her imagination, memory and feelings. Pamela Weisdorf uses bold colorful abstractions to explore unique materials and techniques which create texture, mood and movement.

This free exhibit will be on display at Hopkins Center for the Arts at 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN, 55343 from March 1, 2012 through April 8, 2012. NEW STUDIO SPACE

I am now located in a beautiful new studio in the Northrup King Building, "Gallery 300." If you have not visited lately, stop in this Fall for our First Thursday open studio events. This new, larger space allows me to paint larger, something I have been waiting to do, so stay tuned to see what develops!

Upcoming Special Art Events

2011 Art-A-Whirl:
The infamous Northeast Arts District art crawl, Art-A-Whirl, will be held May 20 -22. Studios will be open Friday, May 20 from 5:00-10:00pm, Saturday, May 21 from noon-8:00pm and Sunday, May 22 from noon-5:00pm. Our studio/gallery, Dock 5, will be hopping with activity that weekend. Several guest artists will be joining us, including a couple of jewelry designers. We will offer some fun art demos as well as snacks and lively conversation about art. Don't miss this great celebration of local art. I have many new paintings, including a colorful and energetic series entitled "Fluidity." This year, many of my new works are in the $200 - $400 range.

Group Exhibit:
Five other artists and I have put together a proposal for a group exhibit. We are called the "Escape Artists," since we are expanding our artistic horizons and "escaping" our usual way of approaching our art. Our proposal has been accepted at the Hopkins Art Center and we are continuing to prepare for the exhibit which will take place in March of 2012. The proposal, "Master Manipulations," will feature our interpretations of various master paintings.

June First Thursday Performance Art:
On Thursday, June 2 at 7:00pm, the "Escape Artists" will be performing their version of creating a Jackson Pollack type painting together. This exciting event, which will take place in the Dock 5 gallery, will be filmed. A local cellist, Anna Vasquez, will enliven the event by tailoring the music to the creation of this work. The film will be used as an installation in front of that painting during the group exhibit. Be sure to come and add to this frenetic and exciting event.

My New Studio/Gallery

New Studio Space
I've moved (again!) In August, I moved into a larger studio, still located in the Northrup King Building in the Northeast Arts District of Minneapolis. I am currently in Susan Fryer Voigt's studio space, called
Dock 5, in galleries 17 & 18. This space is shared by several talented artists and opens directly outside to the building's front parking lot from the first floor level. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be a part of this art community.

I continue to explore new ideas and create new abstract works, both large and small, both in acrylic and more recently, in oil. Stop in and say hello and think about adding to your art collection.

Open Saturdays
Many artists in the Northup King Building are now open from Noon to 4:00pm on most Saturdays. Check out the website www.northrupkingbuilding.com for a list of participating artists for any given Saturday.

We continue to host open studio nights every first Thursday of the month from 5:00 to 9:00pm. This includes the whole Northrup King Building. The remaining First Thursdays of 2010 include:

It's March and just maybe Spring is in sight. It's time a perfect time to get out of the house and check out the local art scene.

My latest exhibition is at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Every 10 years, the MIA does the "Foot in the Door" exhibition which offers Minnesota artists an opportunity to display any piece of art that will fit in a 12" X 12" X 12" space. "Foot in the Door 4" is located in the newer Target wing and runs through June 13. My piece is called "Onions on Ice" and is at location 065-05. Almost 5,000 artists submitted a piece this year so I hope you get a chance to see this wide and interesting array of Minnesota art.

Exhibit at the Mall of America: I currently have exhibit at Bloomingdales at the Mall of America, running from December 22, 2009 - January 27, 2010. Bloomingdales features local artists, allowing them to display their art in a beautiful setting near the South entrance to the store. Among the paintings, I have three from my latest Mood Study series. I hope you get a chance to stop by to take a look.

New Studio Space

In search of just the right studio space, I am moving again. This time, it's just down the hall in the Northrup King Building, suite #429. I am joining Karen Wilcox, who is a painter and sculptor and Anita Davis, also a painter. This lovely gallery-like space has great light and a view of downtown Minneapolis.

Please join us at First Thursday Open Studio Night, March 5, 2009, from 5:00-9:00p.m. As always, it's a fun night out, rambling around this impressive arts building. You never know what you might find or even who you might run into. Hope to see you.

Another new year......always an opportunity to begin anew, look at things in a fresh perspective, learn something new. Creating art is much the same: trying to see things in a unique way.

I am beginning this year working on a couple of different projects: one will continue my interest in urban abstracts, both on canvas and works on paper; the other will explore multi-media techniques.

My studio is located in the Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson St NE, #404, Minneapolis, MN 55413. This historic building in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Art District has over 125 studios, represented by artists of all types of media. The Northrup King Building participates in Open Studio Nights, the First Thursday of every month, from 5:00 - 9:00p.m.

During the 2008 holiday season, studios will be open on Saturdays, December 6, 13 and 20 to entice shoppers.

Please stop in for some hot cider and cookies. You just might find the right gift for that someone special.
